It's snowing outside. Our little slice of the world is covered in a beautiful shimmery blanket of white. When we woke up this morning, I looked outside and sure enough we had a good layer of snow. Yippee! No school! I run downstairs to check the school's website. Now, I grew up in Southern California and we didn't have snow days. I think I remember once there was no school because our school didn't have air conditioning and it was too hot, or we didn't have school because of some brush fire. But, this morning I felt like a little kid hoping for a day where I didn't have to get all the kids bundled up to bring Annika to preschool by 8:30 this morning.
I anxiously wait for the school's website to upload. Nothing, no alerts, nothing. So I go to the public school's website because we follow what they do...nothing. There must be some mistake! There is snow on the ground and more snow coming down, surely they would cancel school! Right? I run to the basement to turn on the news...nope, nothing at all about our school district being canceled. I ask Dan, "If there is snow on the ground and it's still coming down, don't they cancel school?!" (The true SoCal girl coming out in me). Ahh, then I remember, we aren't in Virginia where even the slightest whisper of snow sends everyone first to the grocery store to stock up on t.p. and milk, then to their homes where they lock themselves inside until the barely quarter inch of snow that actually fell melts an hour later.
I remember reading an article while I was still in Virginia about Weather Warriors vs. Weather Wimps. I can safely say I am a weather wimp. I would never make it with my cousins up in New England. However, my husband is a Weather Warrior. Afterall, he's from Iowa where he "drove to school in his little blue Honda Civic through 10 foot tall snow drifts uphill both ways." That's why when you see pictures of our kids in the snow it's my dear husband who is with them. I just quick run out to take a picture and then hustle back inside. Afterall, someone needs to keep the hot chocolate hot and make sure we are stocked up on toilet paper.

Seattle is just like Virginia ... any trace of snow and we're shut down. At first, after living in Chicago, I was calling people wimps for shutting down the city after an inch of snow ... but then seeing how the hills around here are CRAZY, it made sense why no one wanted to venture out -- it's a downhill skating rink out there!
ReplyDeleteWe are expected to get snow tonight and tomorrow -- I'm hoping for it, because I could take a day of working from home!!
I only hope weather on your end or mine won't cause my flights to be delayed! FOUR MORE WAKE UP-S!
he he!! Too funny - but I'm sure the kids are enjoying the snow - Ethan sure is (oh and I've kept meaning to tell you, he's decided he's marrying Annika...just thought DAN should know! =) ) Love you!
ReplyDeleteyou think YOU'RE a wimp, you should see these people down here in AL. They get all tingly with excitement when ice is predicted.
ReplyDeleteAhh! I'm In Virginia just waiting for a snow day! Loudoun and west is awaiting freezing rain...me just waiting for a snow day! :) It will come.
ReplyDeleteOops I accidentally posted my comment on your old entry about a little bit of snow. So I will just re-post it here where it makes much more sense. You can delete it from the other entry if you like.
ReplyDeleteIn all fairness we Virginian's usually freak out and rush out to the store for the first snow fall of the year... after that everyone calms down a bit more, unless of course the weather man starts predicting more than 3 inches, then all bests are off ;).
haha! that's why us yanks laugh at all of you! i remember teaching in the snowiest part of massachusetts and driving to school on nasty icy roads, then sitting in my classroom with my students, huddled in our jackets, sitting in the darkness because we had no electricity or heat!
ReplyDeletehowever, in defense of northern virginia, there are lots of kids who walk to school, millions of lawsuit possibilities, and people who can't drive on picture perfect days!
Girl, I made Big S turn off the a/c because I was freezing at 73 degrees. I am going to shrivel and die when I get to SD. I hear ya. The biggest reason that noVa shuts down is that they don't have enough snow plows for when it does snow....so people freak because they are all afraid that their street is going to be the one not to get plowed....and even when they do plow....they never can replow fast enough and that is why they dump salt and sand like a blizzard....sigh...that used to drive me crazy....because then you look like an idiot if you don't wash your car right after the snow and you are caked with salt and sand!!!!
ReplyDeleteI must reply to a few of you:
ReplyDeleteRachel - Not funny, now I am going to require Ethan to sit down and have a heart to heart with me the next time we are together.
Danielle - You can't laugh at me...I barely ever wore a coat in VA, because I didn't feel the weather warranted it.
Rachelle - You don't have to wash your car if it's white like mine :)!
Rachel V.P. I agree, I usually think they are wimps here in Lacey/Olympia for freaking out about a little snow but today we got dumped on pretty good and there are no snow plows in sight!
ReplyDeleteReb, remember watching a movie on New Year's day 2005 in S.C.? A little ice (ok a lot) didn't stop your SoCal self from seeing a flick! Of course, it didn't end well:(
Hey Reb - hope you are staying warm with the ice! If you get a second, I tagged you in a meme. Can't wait to hear how you're doing, regardless! Thinking of you often!
ReplyDeletelove,
rachel
MY hubby grew up in Virginia and loves the snow..I love it too but only enough to go to big bear once or twice a year :-) I actually really love it but don't know how I would feel living in it without having the option to leave!
ReplyDeleteRebekah, Did you really think that KS didn't get snow or were you just hoping? I have to say that we were told that the Dayton area is just like NoVA weather wise. Not so true. When it's cold we are at least 10 degrees colder and we always get the nasy end of any weather front because we are far enough south that we stay just warm enough for the sleet, freezing rain and ice.
ReplyDeleteWhat is Malissa talking about? Was it an embarassing end? Or did the movie end bad?
ReplyDeleteMom E
