Well, I knew I would come up with something to blog about! Unfortunately, for my mom it isn't a picture of the kids or anything like that...that will come soon!
Later on in the summer, we are going to be going on a road trip. Yay!! We are going to be visiting very dear friends all the way in Virginia with some fun stops on the way there and on the way back. It's going to be quite a trek, but worth it with the cost of airplane tickets, luggage, pretzels, seat belts, or whatever else the airlines are charging for these days. So what's a mom and dad to do with 4 kids under the age of 6 in the car for a LONG time (other than stick in a DVD and call it good)?

I am hoping that the following things will keep them occupied for more than the first 100 miles.
Here's my attempt to entertain, entertain, entertain...special thanks to my friend over at Smarter Moms for some fabulous ideas.
Each kiddo will get a tote bag filled with things that look like this (or similar depending on the age):
I am hoping that the following things will keep them occupied for more than the first 100 miles.
I SPY BOTTLE: this former water bottle is filled with rice and little items (dice, paper clips, buttons, etc). The goal is to find all the items that are in the bottle by shaking the bottle and moving the rice around. I took a picture of the items in the bottle and printed it out so the kiddo can see what they are supposed to be looking for. Yes, for those of you who know my son, the top is super-glued shut. :)

SANDPAPER ART: coarse sandpaper with different lengths of yarn. The yarn sticks to the sandpaper so the kiddo can make different shapes, letters, pictures, etc.
ALUMINUM FOIL ART: kinda like mess free clay. I found a box of 25 individual sheets of foil at the dollar store. They can practice their origami swans like they make at restaurants for your leftovers. Practice for a future job?
SMALL METAL BAKING SHEET: this was a great idea I found (also got from the dollar store). It's great to use as a hard surface for drawing, coloring, etc. But it also has a lip around the edge to keep things from rolling away.
PAPER DOLL BOOK: I couldn't find a sticker book that I liked, so hopefully this will work. I included a zip-lock bag to put the used paper dolls into when they are done.
EDIBLE JEWELRY (still to be assembled): peel apart licorice with Apple Jacks or Fruit Loops. Each kiddo will make their own fruit loop necklace and then eat it for a snack!
COLORED PENCILS and TWISTABLES: love these rather than markers (ink everywhere) or crayons (they melt!!).
SCHOOL WORKBOOKS: so we don't forget everything that we learned last year. :)
Then I made each kiddo their own Activity Binder:
With games like Road Trip Bingo:
Or a scavenger hunt:
The alphabet game: I printed out a few lists of the alphabet so the kiddo can cross off the letter when they find it.
Even though, thanks to GPS, maps are going the way of the buffalo, I still thought it would be fun for each kiddo to have a map of where we are going. I had Dan print out a large map, but then also individual maps of each of the legs. Maybe this will help with the "Are we there yet?" questions. Wishful thinking?

Yep, that's about it.
I put each game in plastic sheet protectors so the kids can use removable stickers instead of writing on the game. This way the game can be played over, and over, and over (did I mention we will be driving over 2200 miles?) and over again.
Now, what does mommy need in her tote bag to get her through this trip?

Yep, that's about it.
Will let you know how my planning turned out! Oh, and don't worry, I did go to the library and stock up on DVD's...I'm not totally crazy!
What are your go to road trip ideas?! This is a round trip, so I may need some ideas for the way home. :)
Um, my kids are from suburbia. Do you know how entertaining silos are for miles!?? And the Peterbuilt trucks, and farm animals?? We get mileage out of just THAT.
ReplyDeleteWow, I am impressed with your roadtrip preparedness! The kids may hardly want to watch a movie at all :) On our 3500 mile trip, we watched two, maybe three. Love the activity binder idea. You could get some magnets (magnetic kid poetry for annika) to go on those baking pans. Maybe some window clings so they can decorate their window. We did some surprise bags too. Fun little toys (new farm animals etc.) in paper bags that are taped shut. When they are bored, toss one back and see what's inside ;)
ReplyDeleteOH, and some kid Sudoku puzzles. They use 2x2 grids instead of 3x3 and colors/pictures instead of numbers. Both Aidan and Lauren enjoy them.
ReplyDeleteRebekah asked if we were bringing the Atlas..to which I replied...we have GPS. I wonder if 10 years down the road the Atlas will be extinct?
ReplyDeleteThanks for this post. We, too, have a long road trip this summer.
ReplyDeleteWhat? No audiobooks?? :) Guess that's for when they get older. Remember the classics we listened to? Ahhh...good memories of road trips. (One does forget the not-so-good ones!)
ReplyDeleteI've got some Cars 2 suckers and a pack of gum. Think that will have the same effect?
ReplyDeletethat is SO cool!!! Great ideas!! I printed some games for the kids for our drive to Wellsburg. I found the ones I printed for the girls in the trash bag on the way to Wellsburg!! :( boooo.... I bet yours will go over better than mine did!
ReplyDeleteWow, Rebekah! What great ideas! I always knew you were a SMARTER MOM! :)
ReplyDeleteReb -
ReplyDeleteI am sooooo disappointed that you didn't mention including in the activity books "The License Plate Game."
Mark
Oh don't you worry Mark, I have a license plate game sheet printed out for Dan and I. May be a few years for the kids with that one.
ReplyDeleteMalissa-great ideas! Thanks!!
Momma Lou-I hope our trips aren't as memorable as our family road trips...Hey, that's OUR tire!! :)
I don't know how old your kids are, but here are a few things I did when we took our four across the country from Mn to KY. And we did it with a bachelor friend of my husbands and NO ELECTRONICS at all. Not even "well, we had a single movie but that was just for the times when we were stuck in traffic" or anything!
ReplyDeleteAlso, you can use some magnets or dry erase markers on your little cookie sheets. :)
1. Instead of packing everyone their own suitcases and having them all unpack them every time they get dressed, I put all 4 kids' clothes in one Walmart bag for each day. So each morning I only had to pull out one bag and everyone's clothes (down to socks and a diaper) were in the single bag. Also, instead of a suitcase I put all the little clothing bundle bags in a big plastic tote. The beauty of that? Then all the dirty laundry got tossed in the tote! :)
2. I picked out all the toys/games/coloring books etc I wanted to take. Then I split the lot in half. I put half in the trunk on the way there and then pulled it out on the way home so they had "new" things to play with!
Wow, i'm impressed! I was glad when you said you glued the lid on that bottle with the rice in it cause i thought you had lost your marbles! ;) Oh, and i'm soo with you on the hot tamales...Hope your trip is awesome!
ReplyDeleteThose ideas are great. I will have to check out that mom site. We will be going to Chicago.
ReplyDeleteLove these great ideas - I must say though that I am a little envious of your trip to VA!! Hug everyone you see for me!! Have a great trip - we LOVE long trips, they are fun and memory making!
