I think that as long as I have school age kids and I am living here in the Midwest, the start of school will sneak up on me. For 13 years, I started school the day after Labor Day. September was just when school started (I think there was something in the Constitution, I'm just sayin'). Well, the first day of school for Annika was today and it's the 17th of August!! It seems like every year they move it up too. Who knows next year we may start on the 5th of July, the 4th is a holiday after all. It just doesn't seem right that school has started. I guess it all pays off when we are out of school by Memorial Day.
Today, I brought Annika to school and she didn't shed a tear, don't ask how I did. Let's just say I put on a brave face. I think that is the way it's going to be every year. Taryn does start Pre-K after Labor Day, and then I think the water works will really come...and some may even be shed by her. Will be sure to post about how that goes.
We took the obligatory pics in front of the front door...one without the brothers and sisters
and one with (Taryn didn't feel the need to join in the picture)..
and we took the obligatory pic in front of her desk.
Sigh. It's already gone by too fast. Next thing you know she will be driving herself to school. That is until I saw this on the way to dropping her off...(I snapped a quick picture on my way home).
From those gathered on the sidewalk it looked like they were all high-schoolers on their way to the local high school that is just down the road from Annika's school. The police officer on the scene was standing in front of them and looked as though he was giving them all a very stern lecture.
Nope, no license, EVER! I will be bringing her to school every day for the rest of her life. I'm not sure how she will explain it to her college roommate, but we will cross that bridge when we come to it...with me driving, of course.

Cute pictures! i just made john get up off the couch to come look at the picture of the cars...wow! i'm gonna guess there might have been some texting and driving going on...
ReplyDeleteHope you guys have a great school year!
I have been in 5 car accidents in my life (only 1 was my fault)...it is a massive rush of adrenaline followed by a huge low (if you are at fault). When I saw that picture of the cars I laughed (only because I'm assuming no one was seriously hurt)...how sucky would it be to start school that way.
ReplyDeleteAs for Annika...it's cool to see the innocence of grade school. Ah when PE was your most important subject...those were the days.
Totally sure I will cry when I drop off here in Tokyo on Monday. For sure. Orientation tomorrow. I may cry then, too, just for practice. xoxoxo
ReplyDeleteThe other accident probably happened from someone taking a picture of someone on the other side of the road while driving! :)
ReplyDeleteShe's growing up fast. Can't wait to see them all again.
Great post Reb!! :) Can't believe she started school already. Here in Sioux Center we have a whole nother week of summer vaca yet :)
ReplyDeleteI just realized...Annika is in the back row...YES! No suck up kids sitting in the front row in the Eekhoff family!
ReplyDeleteGreat back to school pictures!
ReplyDeleteWe used to get out of swim lessons at the same time the nearest high school got out. It really was dangerous to drive by there as all those kids were leaving. I was surprised how stereotypically bad they drove.
What are you talking about?? Back row, I don't see a picture of more kids. There is nothing wrong with front row people, I should know. I can't believe Annika is almost 7. The texting comment is right on, if you checked their phones, I bet they were all on them. Not saying I haven't ever texted while driving but it isn't wise.
ReplyDeleteNevermind, I figured out the back row comment.
ReplyDeleteI agree that school should start the day after the pancake breakfast..I mean Labor Day. This will be my last "First day of school" at Calvin and my senior still doesn't even have her permit to drive!
ReplyDeleteLove the pictures of Annika...miss those grade school days. She is adorable. Rough way for the high school students to start the school year...hopefully a lesson that may save a life.
So grown, I agree, I shed plenty on Lily's first day of preschool...I'm sure you'll be the same way....Hard to watch them grow up, but fun to watch God grow them to be such great little ladies!
