Cucumbers!!!

Rain + sun= more stinkin cucumbers than I know what to do with!
Our first harvest of cucumbers was on July 1...pretty impressive don't ya think?

Then I went out on the 6th and picked 10 more (no pics of those).
Tonight we went out again. O.k. this is ridiculous! (If you don't want to take the time to count, there are 32!)

As I was picking them, I told Dan that next year he need only plant one cucumber plant, not a whole row!!!

Something I do know what to do with is cherry tomatos, just pop them in your mouth and you are good to go! The wonderful thing about picking tomatos is when you are done and your fingers smell like tomato leaves. It may sound weird but it's one of the best smells. It's the smell of summer. We are also growing some basil so I wrapped an uber-fresh basil leaf around my little red tomato and YUMMY!!! Yep, summer is here.

Annika is a fan of the green beans. For every one she picks, one goes into her mouth.

  1. You have no idea how jealous I am of your fresh veggies. Well, maybe not of the cucumbers. My topsy turvy tomato plant has blossoms so maybe we'll even get to taste a real tomato! How fun for your whole family, tho!

  3. Wow, that cucumber crop is amazing, I hope you like to make pickles, if not, they are great for the eyes and make a great mask for the hair and face once they are mixed in the blender:) (not that I have tried that or anything!)

  4. Wow, those are some serious cucumbers ya got there. Hello cucumber sandwiches, come to mama! Abe and I love cucumber, tomato and red onion salad with Italian dressing (we use the Zesty Italian packets with olive oil and balsamic vinegar). If you want to turn it into a Greek salad just add the feta cheese with some olive oil, fresh squeezed lemon juice and a bit of freshly ground pepper on top, and you got yourself on dang good salad!

    This looked promising too: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Homemade-Refrigerator-Pickles/Detail.aspx

  5. Wow, Dan must be in garden/farming heaven with good Kanasas dirt. If I remember correctly, he doesn't like to eat most of what he grows. You could have a side business of a road side fresh veggie stand.

  7. Heather, you are correct...I don't like tomatoes, but I like to grow them because they do so well. I don't mind cucumbers in ranch dressing. My two favorite "veggies" are corn and green beans.

As for the soil...it looks black and rich, but it is not a whole lot better than VA surprisingly. I have a lot of work to do with the soil yet to get better flavor out of my future produce :).

I branched out this year and tried some new stuff...basil and broccoli. Needless to say, broccoli will not make the cut next year!

  9. This is AMAZING!! Abel and I both think you all look so at home in the Plains =)

And to think, a few months ago, there was just land there. Wow! Dan must be very proud of his good work (you must be too!) =)

  10. Next time you head to SC you better take some of those cukes along. Vinegar pickles are great on grilled hamburgers. Your garden really looks good Dan. I am jealous. I planted some gr beans behind the bike shop but the rabbits got to them before I got wise and blocked a hole in my fence. YOu would think I would know better. Did you have a bit of a problem with bugs in your broccoli?

  11. I agree with Annika! Green beans are THE best! I actually see green beans in our teeny tiny garden crop so i'm very excited to make a pot of fresh green beans with butter and pepper. YUMMMY!!!!!!!!

My broccoli got eaten by something but thankfully the varmint left my beans alone!!

I see a few carrot spouts so I'm looking forward to those too! Fresh veggies - YUM!
