About a month ago, I was at a friend's house during some crummy weather. We were discussing the difference between sleet and hail. I thought it was hailing outside and she said, "No, that is just sleet." Obviously, since I grew up in Southern California, where any moisture coming from the sky is a rarity, I took her word for it.
Then last Sunday night (April 3rd) happened. We had just come home from our small group so the kids were still up. We were having our bedtime snack when I heard some knocking. It sounded like someone was throwing some rocks on the side of the house. Then it got stronger and louder and then it went crazy!!! We kept the kids away from the windows, meanwhile, I am trying not to freak out in front of them.
This is what blasted into our windows...
Thankfully (and amazingly) our windows weren't broken. But, many neighbors and friends had windows shattered, and cars and roofs totaled. The area is hopping with insurance adjusters and repair companies.
Pieces of solid ice compared to a quarter so you can get an idea of the size
I think I want to go back to Southern California where I just have to worry about earthquakes and wildfires. :)
Here's Dan's attempt at a video of the chaos...he starting taking it just as the storm started to die down...but you can get a little idea of the sound...

If you have siding on any part of your house, and if your roof has been damaged I believe your homeowners insurance should cover the cost of fixing it. Back in early 2000 I think it was, we had a hail storm here in NoVA and everyone and I do mean EVERYONE hit up their insurance companies for the damage done to their homes...and the hail was nowhere near the size of the ones in your pictures. I have a feeling the roofing and siding guys in your area are gonna be very busy for the foreseeable future ;).
ReplyDeleteWow, I don't think I have ever seen hail that size before. That sound at the beginning of the video would freak me out.
ReplyDeleteLove your commentary, Dan!

SCARY!!! So much more than a San Diego earthquake, for sure!
ReplyDeleteLove the vlog! That's it! Dan is taking video of the reunion, and maybe me, too!
WOW! That was crazy! I'm glad you didn't sustain any damage. I'm sure that will be a storm story retold around the dinner table for years to come.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Bringing up boys. You might want to check your shingles and siding. Also if you have any plastic or metal trim around your windows and doors. Sometimes that doesn't show up right away especially if it is metal. At least with ours, the paint started to pop off after awhile. Liked the video.
ReplyDeleteTo all you concerned...thank you. We had the insurance agent out yesterday...result...totalled roof, and a bunch of other stuff.
