Preparedness... or lack thereof...

Back "home" the hills are burning away with unconstrained fires. Here we have tornado season...well, we don't have threats of tornadoes today...but, we are technically in the tornado months.  For these types of natural disasters, we, as humans, are supposed to be prepared.  You know, in case we have to leave suddenly or run down into our shelters, we need to have the stuff that we need. Unfortunately, we don't really know what we need until we don't have it. Like yesterday, didn't know I needed avocados until I needed avocados, and I didn't have any avocados. I know, you should revoke my SoCal card. I should always have avocados. Since around here they about 75 cents a pop for a measly little avocado, I usually don't have a supply.  But, I thought I had them, and I didn't.  Anyway, back to being prepared. Let me take you down to our "storage room" (which would also be our storm shelter) to see what we would have to live on in the event of an emergency...

I think we are uber-prepared!! In case of emergency, I could whip you up a bowl of barbecued Mini-Wheats! And if that goes horribly wrong, don't worry, I have toilet paper. Yea, so it looks like perhaps I should be more prepared.

So, other than the items on the FEMA recommended supply list, what else should I put in my emergency kit?

Coffee...lot's of coffee.

Baby Wipes...since someone's nose, hands or rear is always dirty. Plus if we don't have running water, I could do a baby wipe baths.  Actually, I've done those and I have running water. Don't judge.

Fruit Snacks...because apparently my kids are addicted to them and are under the impression that man can live on fruit snacks alone.

Loveys... if  Brown Bear, Beary, Bunkey or Bun-bun are around, then all is right in the world.

The Frozen Soundtrack...since that's the only thing all my kids will listen to without arguing. And, we have listened to it everyday without ceasing for the last 2 months. Let it go, kids. Let. It. Go.

Our tablets... Afterall, Annika's got a farm to take care of. Hay Day has just informed me that she has bacon ready to be collected.  By the way, I've never heard a pig farmer "collecting" bacon.

And last but not least, I will need everyone to bring a "Can Do" Attitude, because if we are down in the storm shelter for any length of time we will be working on this beast of a mess...

In all seriousness, I am thinking of and praying for my family and friends out west in San Marcos and Esco. Praying the winds will change soon!! Take care out there and be safe!! And, doggone it, get those emergency kits ready!!

  1. Ours consists of ketchup, fruit snacks(two big boxes, from Halloween-your kids couldhang out in our shelter), marshmallows(also from Halloween so cool shapes and colors) and Reeses PB Cups(keep Mommy happy)! Then we have plates and Kleenex!
On a serious note...Bethany suggested keeping our winter boots there...just I'm case!
