Running, tulips and street sweepers...

Every once and awhile (I WILL NOT say "quite often") I wonder why we picked up and moved out to the Midwest. Then it is times like last weekend that I am reminded as to why we left our "family" in Virginia for the Plain Life. It's just a "quick" five hour drive to spend quality time with grandpa and grandma, aunts and uncles, and cousins. We have already made this drive 3 times since we moved here and it's becoming an "easy" trip. We have it timed where we leave on Thursday afternoon at naptime which gives a few hours of quiet driving. By the time we arrive it's time for dinner, some playtime and then bedtime. Repeat the route in reverse on Sunday. It has really worked well. Now, Dan's challenge is to see how quick he can do the trip. Last time we made it in 4 hours and 50 minutes. I see an Excel spreadsheet in our future.

This trip I ran a 5k and we were able to see some tulips in full bloom all the while enjoying some good Dutch culture.
With my cheering section

Crossing the finish line (I can't believe I am going to run 10 more miles in October!)

My runningmate Steph

With the run out of the way, it was time to enjoy the Festival. We decided the girls could pick a ride. The little catepillar roller coaster looked harmless enough. Now, other than one of our favorite parks in Virginia with a little train, we really haven't been on too many carnival rides. I asked the toothless man if the girls were big enough to ride, "yeah, they look big enough" he says (surely a man that understood the importance of proper dental hygiene would know if a 2 year was ready to ride). They were "strapped" in with a little chain across their lap and the ride took off. Um, it didn't even make it half way around before Taryn was screaming to get off. Once Annika saw Taryn getting off she wanted nothing to do with the roller coaster ride.

Unsuspecting

You can see Taryn holding on for dear life.

$8 well spent...oh well, maybe next year. We then sat down and enjoyed the parade. But, first, all Dutchies know that you can't have a parade with a dirty street!! Out came the street sweepers.

Some pictures by the tulips

  1. Oh poor Taryn, she's going to be scared of roller coasters the rest of her life! Her face is pretty priceless though on that second shot.

Congrats on the race! My half marathon is coming up in a month, so hopefully I'll be able to run the 13.1 with little discomfort! :-)

    Love ya!

  3. That is so cool that you have the trip timed so well. LOL and I love how you guys make it in time for dinner. I assume as guests, right? I think it will be a LOOOOOONG time before I run anything again! I hope I can. We will see.

  4. Taryn's head was flopping around ar the coaster went over a little hill.....this Grandma felt sorry for her. No wonder she cried. Never trust a carny.
She enjoyed the rest of the day though as did all the kids.
